From the comments: How to forge your own identity

May 23, 2014 /

Community member Sofia Papa wrote this in response to Liu Bolin’s TED Talk, The invisible man:

“I feel like the ideas and messages Bolin is sharing through his style of art are very similar to the ideas Ralph Ellison expressed in his novel The Invisible Man. … Both Ellison and Bolin seem to recognize and wrestle with the reality that within civilization it is extremely difficult for the individual to establish an independent and personal identity among the restrictions and judgements found in society (whether it be Chinese society, American society, etc.). It is interesting that despite various advances, people have not been able to overcome encountering this same dilemma.”
